TROPICAL STORM HAIYAN – LOCAL NAME “YOLANDA”

Tropical Storm (TS) Haiyan (local name “Yolanda” slammed into the various islands of the Philippines starting at 4.00 AM, November 8, 2013. Packing winds of 315 kph, Estimated 10 million people were affected, at least 3,000 dead and missing.

TS Yolanda made landfalls in five areas: Guiuan, Samar; Tacloban City and Tolosa town in Leyte; Bantayan in Cebu; Estancia in Iloilo; and Coron in Palawan. At least 41 provinces were affected in Visayas, Northern Mindanao including Dinagat island and Southern Luzon: Bicol region, Mindoro and Palawan.

2,344 people were confirmed dead as of November 14. Government fears the reported 10,000 deaths maybe a low estimate. Most died from drowning, trapped in collapsed building and hit by flying debris. Some 500,000 people are in 1,444 evacuation centers. Many women and children are among the dead, missing and those in evacuation centers. A woman in Tacloban City gave birth just after she was rescued by her husband from floating debris.
